There are many places to go to meet other people who use FontLab, whether you are looking for help, inspiration, a design critique or something else!
The FontLab user forum is a good starting point.
TypeDrawers is great online community and resource an online forum primarily about type design.
You can find an extensive list of type design resources, including information on books and type design education on Thomas Phinney’s site.
If you’re looking for books in English, you can start with How to create typefaces by Cristóbal Henestrosa, Laura Meseguer and José Scaglione. Also helpful are Karen Cheng’s Designing Type, and the out of print Fontographer: Type by design by Stephen Moye (invaluable info about proper outline construction and approaches to letter drawing).
You can also consider attending international type conferences, such as ATypI and TypeCon TypeCon. There are many other regional conferences worldwide.
