The Font Window and the Glyph Set
A font’s glyph set is the collection of forms available to represent text. Before editing individual drawings, you need to see what that collection contains, identify its members, and select the right objects for a change. The Font window and Font Map provide that overview, including views that show expected glyphs still missing from the font.
This chapter follows the collection from inspection to organization and editing. Names and Unicode assignments establish identity; tags, flags, and notes help organize work. Filters and searches gather useful subsets, while creation, copying, and reordering change the collection itself. Throughout these tasks, the current glyph, the selected glyphs, and the displayed set have different roles.
The Font Window
Survey the glyph collection, read its indicators, and navigate and select items precisely.
Font Window and Font Map
Use the Font window and Font Map to inspect a glyph collection and choose a suitable inventory arrangement.
Font Window Anatomy
Read the grid, list, sidebar, and status bar, including glyph-cell captions, placeholders, and indicators.
Navigating the Font Window
Scroll and size the glyph grid, choose fixed columns or Flex, and adjust the list view.
Selecting Glyphs
Distinguish the current glyph from a selection, select precise groups, and interpret fields that describe several glyphs.
Glyph Identity, Encoding, Metadata
Manage glyph identity and organize work with names, codepoints, tags, flags, and notes.
Glyph Identity
Understand glyph names, indices, and Unicode assignments, including alternate forms that have no direct character assignment.
Managing Glyph Names and Codepoints
Rename glyphs, assign codepoints, use naming schemes, and check the references and mappings affected by a change.
Tagging Glyphs
Assign custom tags, understand computed virtual tags, and use tags to organize or select related glyphs.
Flagging Glyphs
Apply color flags as workflow markers and control whether a change affects one layer or several.
Glyph Notes
Add, edit, and remove glyph notes for one glyph or a selected group.
Filtering, Searching, and Sorting the Glyph Set
Narrow large collections, plan missing coverage, and preserve useful views for repeated work.
Font Filters
Choose glyph-set filters, interpret missing positions, and define Smart Filters from descriptions with a configured Aidus connection.
Searching the Glyph Set
Find glyphs by identity, character properties, measurements, tags, and structural information, or specify an explicit collection.
Saving and Reusing Filters
Return to filter history, save bookmarks, and exchange ordered glyph collections through encoding files.
Sorting Glyph Cells
Choose a display order and distinguish temporary sorting from changing the font’s stored glyph order.
Editing the Glyph Set
Change the glyph collection through creation, deletion, copying, transfer, and reordering.
Creating and Removing Glyphs
Create glyphs from missing positions, names, recipes, Aidus, or the catalog, and remove unwanted entries.
Using the Clipboard
Duplicate, append, and paste glyphs while controlling destination identities, replacement choices, and the affected collection.
Drag-and-Drop Operations
Move glyphs within a view, reorder a font, and transfer glyphs between fonts by dragging.
