Names and Styling
Control the names, classifications, and style links written into exported fonts.
Typographic family and style
The Family field is the typographic family name shared by related styles.
The Style field distinguishes each target within that family, for example
Regular, Light Italic, or Condensed Bold.
Each style name must be unique within its typographic family.
Styling group and link
The Group field is the styling-group name used by applications that expose
only Regular, Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic choices. A styling group can
contain no more than four targets.
The style-link value/name must be one of:
| Link | Bold control | Italic control |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | Off | Off |
| Italic | Off | On |
| Bold | On | Off |
| Bold Italic | On | On |
A one-font styling group should normally use Regular. Bold Italic is meaningful
only when companion styles exist.
Full and PostScript names
The Full Name identifies the target to applications and documents.
TransType rebuilds it when relevant family or style values change.
The PostScript name is a compact unique identifier. It normally joins a
family portion and style portion with one hyphen and contains no spaces.
TransType updates it when family or style naming changes.
Avoid installing or distributing different fonts with identical full or
PostScript names.
Design parameters
- Weight describes stroke weight and drives its numerical weight value.
- Width describes condensation or expansion.
- Slope describes Plain, Italic, or Oblique behavior.
These values affect automatic style names and family organization. Correct
them before running broad Organize commands.
Editing several targets
Select multiple targets to apply a shared value. Mixed values appear as a
placeholder. Naming changes update targets only; the original source files are
not modified.
